Found out- Spirit Notes

Found Out
I Timothy 1:12-17

Thoughts on being FOUND and being FOUND OUT:
When Pastor Lisa was sharing how God initiates finding us, I wrote "God pursues a loving relationship with us that is real and personal" which is a quote from the bible study Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby that I completed in 1993 when I first attended First Baptist Church. The study was led by Larry and Diane Irvin and it was phenomenal. Here are the seven basic tenets of the study:

I loved that study because I learned so much about God's will and my life. I loved it so much that I taught it to youth when Hub Blankenship was the youth pastor at FBC. Then I taught it again in an adult small group at Word of Life Fellowship. I still refer to it over and over again.

Another thing that I noted was what Paul said in I Timothy 1:14, "the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus." Then in verse 16, "But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost (sinner), Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life."
I love how we TRUST in His Grace to change us....to work in us. The song the choir sang was titled "Give me a clean heart." Not, "watch me change myself and hope I get it right." God initiates!! God completes the work.
Psalm 51 contains so many pleadings for GOD to do the work:
Have mercy
Blot out
Wash me
Cleanse me
Purge me
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you."
Notice that what "I" do is TEACH and SHARE his ways. My life and restoration will impact those around me to come to Him.

We are FOUND by God---that's reconciliation.
We are then FOUND OUT by God---that's sanctification through conviction of the Holy Spirit.

LET GO (surrender) AND LET GOD (trust).

From the archives--Letters of His Love

Last week's sermon on School lunch reminded me of how I floated from group to group, person to person, touching lives. Much like Christ did in his ministry.
I found this entry in my journal. I was fourteen. Amazing to see the zeal and the love I had for my friend and bus driver, Chris Smutzer.

Sunday, January 20, 1985

Lord, I feel as if I should be on a show like "Highway to Heaven" or "The Hulk". Because I feel like I'm moving around to different places all the time. I enter into their heart but just long enough to get close then I'm on my way again.  I have just realized this with Chris (my bus driver).
I realize that my job is to just touch someone's heart but I want to do more. Lots more.
I guess I don't have enough faith that they'll come you on their own. I just want to help, so, so much.
I realized that I have felt very protective of Chris. I guess it's like a parent. I want to keep him away from anything that will harm him physically or emotionally.
Lord, I want:

  • Chris to come to be saved by your power
  • he and I to become good friends-we can go to each other for help
  • he and I to be close in later life
  • most importantly, be together with you forever and ever.
It's like asking for a miracle but I believe he's so close, Lord.

School lunch-Spirit Notes

School lunch-Luke 14:1, 7-14

Pastor Lisa began the sermon by having us think about the different cliques we experienced in school.  The congregation named many different groups. We were asked to think about how it was not considered okay to go from group to group...to hang out with those from another group. Rules of the gang, so to speak. How Jesus broke the rules.
It reminded me of how I used to look for someone lonely to sit with at lunch. I didn't really have one group that I ate with consistently. I felt good when my assistant principal, who used to attend my high school, asked me, "Lee Anne, who did you hang out with at Dorman?" Other than my best friend, David Clayton, I was unable to answer. I was friends with many different people from different groups:  the chorus group, the drama group, friends in the band,  and friends on the football team and cheerleading squad.
When I was teaching at Roebuck Elementary School, I insisted on sitting with my students instead of at the teacher table. I got interesting looks but eventually other teachers started doing it too. I used to make appointments with my students. I would tell them that I had two sides...so two students got to eat with me each day. I sought to "bring out" the shy children.  I fondly remember some of the students giving me their chocolate milk. We had a lot of great conversations at the table, me and my second graders. I remember Christopher Bobo and his peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwiches. I remember Christie Levereaux and her mother who shared recipes with me then hired me to keep the girls for two summers. I still remember them ALL. That was the year I had Hannah Sobeski and the girls that created a poetry club and published a book. How sweet and how special.
I really do not have a problem with crossing "group" barriers. I am always looking for outcasts. At my school now, I appeal to parents that don't quite fit the "Pine Street" mold to come be MY volunteers. I don't fit the mold and I don't want to. I do not have anything to prove to anyone and do not need to "identify" with a social group to be successful or happy. That is not how I measure success. I am about my Father's business. That is, being a LIGHT and being SALT in the world around me. Crossing barriers is my challenge. Making a difference in the lives of those around me-that is what is important to me and it doesn't matter what "group" they belong to. I am happy when I work with students and someone asks me, "Don't you know who their father is?" I usually don't...not their earthly father. I don't care about the who's who of Spartanburg. I just care about that student and what they need at the time.
In my sermon notes, I listed current groups that seem to exist in our world:
the Christian vs. the worldly,
the poor vs. the snobby,
the rednecks vs. the elite,
the custodians vs. the faculty.
It has always bothered me as long as I have been at Pine Street that the custodians were not included in the faculty celebrations. When our former principal was there, the custodians did not eat with us. They ate in the back corner of the SAME room we were in. Veneal and I made it known to the PTO and Sunshine Club that we wanted them included. We have come a long way. The celebrations at school are more integrated but those that are hosted at parent's homes off campus are still faculty only. The "staff" still has their own Christmas party where they are served left-overs from the faculty shin dig the day before. Now, granted, they are beautiful and delicious left-overs with lots of fresh delights added to them, still.....
We've made progress but it is still not EQUAL. I know that it would mean the faculty giving up the posh parties, but I am not so sure it wouldn't be for the better. This Friday, I am "busting barriers" again by organizing a reception JUST for the custodial staff tomorrow as their leader, Cecil Turley, leaves us to go to another job!
I think I was always destined to seek out those who are left out. I remember having dreams when I was a young adult that a black person came to my church. (At the time, it was Roebuck Baptist Church where I grew up and like most Southern Baptist churches in the mid-eighties, we had no black members.) In that dream, I was the only person who greeted the black person and sat with them. I have dreamed variations of that dream most of my life.
To me this "barrier busting" is just what I am called to do as a follower of Christ. It is my mission as it was His. So it is a no brainer. My life verse Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify in your Father which is in Heaven." Find somebody, anybody at Dorman High School...it's in their yearbook right beside my name.

Against the flow-Spirit Notes

Against the Flow--Luke 12:49-56
“Where Christ is, there he always goes against the flow.”-Martin Luther
At the beginning of the sermon,  Pastor Lisa asked the congregation to share when they go against the flow. Many of the members named things like standing up for what is right, being an individual, defending the faith, and the like. In my mind and in my notes, I was thinking more about HOW do you go against the flow.
In terms of Christians going against the flow of the world and its ways, I sense an urgent need to do that daily these days. When I see the acceptance of marriage between members of the same sex, I want to go against the flow. When I witness raunchy language and sexual innuendo creeping into prime time television, I want to go against the flow. When I see the leaders of our country fighting for the sake of their political party rather than what is truly best for the people, I want to go against the flow.

So how do I go against the flow...
  1. Discerning when to go against the flow is dependent upon the Holy Spirit stirring me to action. There is a strong sense of NEED to do something or to say something. There is a nervous feeling in my stomach and a KNOWING that I have to act.
  2. I respond with obedience.
  3. I depend on the source of truth. I feel confident in doing what is grounded in Biblical truth.
  4. I trust in His strength and rely on the boldness of the Holy Spirit.
  5. I allow His power to flow through me. I let go of ME and let God use me.
  6. I trust in Him to finish what he started-to work it out- His will to prevail.
The FLOW is easy.
The way of the world is WIDE.
The way of The Lord is NARROW.
I must be PLUGGED into the power of the Holy Spirit.
I must yield to His power to RADICALLY transform ME.
I want to be a part of a REVOLUTION!!
